About Us

Southwest Counseling Service is a comprehensive community mental health and substance abuse treatment center that has been providing services to Sweetwater County for more than 40 years. We provide a wide variety of professional mental health and substance use disorders.

Accreditation

SCS is CARF accredited in 27 areas meeting national standards in Behavioral Health and certified by the State of Wyoming, Behavioral Health Division. SCS is the first in the State of Wyoming to receive the designation of a Certified Community Behavioral Health Center. SCS utilizes evidence based practices to assist individuals in reaching their goals. SCS clinical staff are trained in a variety of evidence based practices and a few examples are:

Assessments: Addresses mental illness and substance use disorders to have a holistic approach as well as medical.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)- Cognitive Behavioral treatment to identify and change negative thinking and replace it with positive thinking.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): Assist individuals to heal from symptoms and emotional distress that are disturbing life experiences.
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART): Significantly reduce symptoms of trauma related issues.
Motivational Interviewing: Assist individuals to find their own motivation to change.
Play Therapy: Safe environment for a child to use play to uncover and deal with issues.
Medication Management: Medications are effective in treating individuals to manage behavioral health diagnosis.
Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT): FDA approved medication in combination with therapy to use for Substance Use Disorders for addiction to alcohol and opioids.

Southwest Counseling Service Board is appointed by the Sweetwater County Board of County Commissioners. SCS Board consists of seven members.

OUR HISTORY

Southwest Counseling Service is a comprehensive, community mental health and substance abuse treatment center in Sweetwater County with offices located in Rock Springs, Wyoming. Southwest Counseling Service was originally named Sweetwater County Counseling and was founded in 1962. The name was changed in 1965 and the center has been a part of Sweetwater County since. The agency originally employed five workers and since then has grown to over 140 employees.

WAMHSAC

Southwest Counseling Service is a part of the Wyoming Association of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Centers (WAMHSAC) working to provide comprehensive services in the State of Wyoming.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Southwest Counseling Service has been a leader in the State of Wyoming for behavioral health.

Accomplishments include:

First to employ a psychiatric advanced practice registered nurse with prescriptive privileges in 1986
In 1989, Southwest Counseling Service opened the first psychosocial group home in the state
Also, developed and implemented a semi-independent living program for individuals in need of less-intense care service
In 2000, Southwest Counseling Service opened the first therapeutic community residential substance abuse treatment program
Opened the first 28-day substance abuse treatment program in the state with Rosen Recovery Center in 1988
Now a short-term substance abuse residential treatment program
Opened the first women’s addiction program in the state in 2000
Was the first residential treatment program in the state to allow women to bring their children into treatment with them
The first community mental health and substance abuse treatment center in Wyoming to be Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) accredited in 2001 and has since been accredited
The first community mental health and substance abuse treatment center in Wyoming to be a Certified Community Behavioral Health Center (CCBHC)
